Vol 7: April Showers of Reflection, Art, and Service

“My name is Carl Choi, and I have been homeless for 2 years...”

I can hardly imagine having to introduce myself this way. Thankfully, I don’t have to, because I’m one of the lucky ones. Sadly, for 68,000 people in the greater Los Angeles area, that is not the case.

The choice to Social Distance, wash our hands, & stay home the last 6 weeks has only been possible for those of us who are blessed enough to have running water, electricity, and a home protected by four walls and a roof. Can you imagine if you couldn’t even wash your hands more than once a day? If you had to live where no one could be 6 ft apart? If the zipper on your nylon tent was the only way you could have any space from the dense population around you?

As you know, I’ve been consumed working to source and distribute much needed PPE for local hospitals, hospices, and prisons. In the midst of it all, I too had forgotten about the often overlooked community of Skid Row. Fortunately, a friend introduced me to Jun Cha, who is running a very noble campaign called PROTECT ANGELS that I would like you to get involved with. Help supply our frontline shelters, police, firefighters, and health care providers with PPE, provide updates to the public, and establish long term community support for our most vulnerable neighbors.
The Good Fight isn’t over yet. We must continue our fight to prevent the spread of COVID-19. I know we've gotten more relaxed over the course of the last week, but for the homeless, the virus has run rampant among their population. In our efforts to solve this crisis, it's imperative we consider our most vulnerable. Please support PROTECT ANGELS with whatever you canEvery little bit counts.

Last week we dove into some our favorite quarantine-time reads, including comic book series, magazines, and good ol' fashioned books. What will we explore this week? Join the LunchStream to find out!

Whatcha listening to? (music, podcasts, audio books, etc.)
I'm definitely more of a visual person, and during quarantine I'm learning Illustrator, working on my photography, and taking the time to meditate whenever needed. So, I'm listening to the sound of my thoughts?
Whatcha eatin? Any favorite recipes?
I wish I could tell you I've been cooking my grandmother's recipes. It's been a diet of Beard Papa's new york cheese cake, wine, cheetos, cheese; it's a theme. And I drink a green juice in the morning, so I feel like I'm being good. ;)

Whatcha watchin’?
I have a queue of classic films, but right now I'm living to the rhythm of Heidi & Tim every Friday because I seek that soothing nostalgia. And documentaries on artists I've always been interested in: Austrian designer Stefan Sagmeister's The Happy Film (amazon) & LA street photographer Estevan Oriol's LA Originals (netflix).

Whatcha eatin? Any favorite recipes?
Bagel sandwiches with salad in the morning because they're easy to make. My favorite meals are homemade Korean and Japanese dishes like soondubu and soba noodles. I'm also learning how to garden, which is a bit outside of my daily routine.

Whatcha listening to? (music, podcasts, audio books, etc.)
I've been listening to a lot of artists I work with such as DAWN, Tiara Imani, FrankHaveMercy, Naem, & Ila Orbis. Tame Impala's latest album and Playboi Carti are on rotation as well. I've also been reading and listening to podcasts focused on health, business, and music, including Music Radar, Sonic Scoop, Peak Prosperity, and various TED Talks.
Good Day Dave! Our graphic artist extraordinaire, Dave Lee delights with skills in graphic design and illustration. Check out his quarantine-time faves:

Whatcha watchin’?
Just finished Ozark. All three series were perfectly executed.

Although you may not be able to explore museums and exhibitions in person right now, there is no shortage of virtual walkthroughs! We recommend listening to this podcast for an overview of some of the virtual museum gems, brought you to by the  Hyperallergic Podcast.

Alternatively, TimeIn (TimeOut during non-quarantine time), has curated this fantastic list of virtual museum and exhibition tours based in LA. Ever wanted to experience the Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirrored Room, but never could? Now's your chance! Virtual style.
